Florida Possibly to Raise Driving Age

A bill has been drawn up by Democrat Representative Irving Slosberg to change the legal driving age from 16 to 17 in the state of Florida.

The Mature Drivers Act was created in hopes of reducing the number of car accidents due to speeding, driving errors, and multi-passenger car accidents. A study has shown that in every year from 1993 to 2003, 16 year old Florida drivers were more likely than older teenagers to make sometimes fatal driving mistakes.

16 year olds are approximately over 20% more likely than those just one year older to be involved in a car accident. In addition, fatal crashes involving young passengers make up nearly half of all car accidents with a 16 year old driver behind the wheel.

Pending the decision of the Mature Drivers Act, young teens may not be able to receive their license until the age of 17.
